In 2016, local artist Johnny Bear Contreras received a commission from USD to create a public artwork for the Kumeyaay Garden that borders the North east edge of campus.
This was not Contreras' first public art commission; he has created works for the City of Poway, Our Lady of Angels Cathedral in Los Angeles, Valley View Casino, and the Solanus Casey Center in Detroit, Michigan. Contreras also has a multi-faceted studio arts practice, including printmaking and sculpture. Contreras's work for USD is now complete, and his preparatory sketches are exhibited in the May Gallery along with several of his other artworks.
